BVOD & OTT: What you need to know
As more viewers have signed up for on-demand services since the pandemic, it’s no surprise that a recent report by research firm Roy Morgan also highlights a growing increase in BVOD viewership over the past 12 months.
What is BVOD?
The acronym BVOD stands for Broadcasting Video-On-Demand. BVOD refers to high-quality content created by conventional broadcasters and made available online through their on-demand streaming service.
Examples of broadcasting video-on-demand services from around the world include All 4, ITV Hub, CBC Gem, SBS On Demand, ABC iView etc.
How does it compare to AVOD?
Broadcasting video-on-demand services rely on ad revenue to cover content and service running costs over a subscription model. It sounds a lot like AVOD, right? You’re not wrong. BVOD is a subset of AVOD; the difference is more to do with ad/service perception and the quality of content available on an exclusively BVOD service.
Essentially, BVOD services are operated by respected broadcasters, which suggests brand safety to viewers; This means audiences are more likely to sign up and trust the ads they are served. It’s this perception of trust that makes BVOD an increasingly attractive model for big-named advertisers and brands. AND not forgetting the ability to access more refined data on demographics to improve ad targeting that’s only possible via online video services.
Online video monetization
The BVOD model is typically ad focused; however, a flexible OTT platform will enable broadcasters to expand monetization options. Daniele Veronese, Sales Director at Magine Pro says, “Today we’re seeing user consumption behaviours drift further toward online streaming platforms than ever before. Now is the time for traditional broadcasters to react; as ad spend on OTT platforms increases.
BVOD offers an excellent opportunity to monetize through targeted advertisements, but broadcasters can also do this in parallel with SVOD and/or TVOD as a hybrid model. Hybrid models enable broadcasters to maximise monetization of their content and potentially see a quicker return on investment.“
Magine Pro’s flexible OTT platform supports SVOD, TVOD, and AVOD business models, either separately or combined, enabling our partners to create a streaming service best suited to their content and customers. For example, broadcasters can choose to operate an ad-focused BVOD model or select a hybrid combination. To find out more about Magine Pro’s OTT services and monetization models get in touch.
5 reasons you should offer Day Pass access
There are various benefits to offering Day Pass access to your video streaming service and content. Check out our top five and get an insight into how one of our partners used Day Pass offers for an exclusive digital event.
What is a Day Pass?
A Day Pass is a complimentary offer for subscription video streaming services. Use them to boost awareness and discovery by giving access to your streaming service (or particular content) for a predefined period. Day passes are particularly beneficial for campaigns, Pay-Per-View offers, or exclusive digital events.
What are the benefits?
- Entice new users to sign up
A Day Pass is a great way to get audiences who are interested but have not yet committed to a subscription to trial your streaming service. You can upsell a subscription within the service or communicate subscription offers later via email and other retargeting activities. - Get some insights
Trial exclusive premium content in your service as a Pay-Per-View event and offer Day Pass access to see whether there’s an appetite for it long term based on the uptake. - Expand reach with partner deals
Bolster your marketing efforts and boost awareness by running campaigns with relevant brand partners. For example, one of our clients partnered with a gift-focused website and included day passes within their movie-themed hampers, which were also promoted on the partner website and through digital channels. - Market creative campaigns
Use day passes to build creative marketing campaigns around the premium content available on your service. For example, create a themed page of content accessible via a Day Pass, such as romance for Valentine’s Day or horror for Halloween. - Host exclusive events
You can even host digital events on your streaming service, including film festivals, premieres or live events and offer access via Day Pass to wider audiences. For example, check out the case study below of how our partners at Draken Film hosted the Göteborg Film Festival.
Case Study: Draken Film & Göteborg Film Festival
Due to the pandemic, in 2021, the Nordic region’s largest film festival, Göteborg Film Festival, became an almost exclusively digital event, accessible through their online streaming service Draken Film, hosted on the Magine Pro platform. In 2022, the festival returned to cinemas but also offered the same digital experience.
The flexibility of a Day Pass meant that attendees weren’t required to be subscribers to Draken Film; anyone in Sweden could purchase an 11-day pass before the festival to access the online content.
The festival launched on a dedicated page across all devices within the Draken Film service, with a well-curated selection of over 50 films were available to stream. Online visitors also had access to exclusive interviews and digital meetings with filmmakers. And to recreate the atmosphere of a festival premiere for the audience watching from home, three new films premiered in parallel every day, both in the cinemas (16 screens around Gothenburg) and on Draken Film.
You can learn more about the Göteborg Film Festival’s digital screenings on Draken Film here.
How to set up a day pass offer in your Magine Pro service

Draken Film to host the Göteborg Film Festival 2022 online
The Nordic region’s largest film festival, Göteborg Film Festival, is set to return this year between 28th January – 6th February in cinemas and online through their digital service, Draken Film, hosted on the Magine Pro platform.
Due to the pandemic, last year’s 2021 edition of the Film Festival became an almost exclusively digital event. At the time, we spoke with Olle Agebro, Head of Acquisition at Draken Film, about the pandemic’s impact on the annual Göteborg Film Festival and the challenges and opportunities they faced pivoting the festival from a traditional event to a digital one for the first time. You can get more insight into planning and project by reading our full interview with Olle here.
In this year’s announcement of the hybrid festival experience, Mirja Wester, CEO of Göteborg Film Festival, said, “After a shaky year, to say the least, it feels fantastic to be able to once again welcome the audience back into the cinemas. However, due to the enormous impact of last year’s digital edition on visitors in all Swedish municipalities, we will focus on developing both physical and digital meeting spaces between films and audiences in 2022. We are now designing the format of the film festival for the future”.
The flexibility of Magine Pro’s OTT platform has enabled Göteborg Film Festival to extend Draken Film’s capabilities to serve as a digital host in 2021 and again in 2022. The festival launches on a dedicated page across all devices within the Draken Film service, with a well-curated selection of over 50 films available to stream. Online visitors will also have access to exclusive interviews, festival atmosphere and digital meetings with filmmakers. And to recreate the atmosphere of a festival premiere for the audience watching from home, three new films will premiere in parallel every day, both in the cinemas (16 screens around Gothenburg) and on Draken Film.
As part of this year’s theme for the festival, Disorder, Göteborg Film Festival will also invite audiences during three exclusive screenings to be hypnotized. The Hypnotic Cinema is a unique experiment involving a hypnotist performing mass hypnosis to transform the audience’s state of mind according to the mood and theme of the specific film. After the screening, the hypnotist will break the hypnosis and examine what happens with the film experience if you dare to lose control over your consciousness by being hypnotized.
This isn’t the first time, Göteborg Film Festival has explored some unusual social experiments. For example, during last years festival, a Swedish nurse spent a week watching the festival isolated in a lighthouse in the North Sea. And in 2019, some audience members could participate in ‘coffin screenings’, which involved watching films inside a locked sarcophagus.

NFTs provide a new model for video monetization through OTT
Magine Pro partner, Paus is partnering with award-winning filmmakers to sell exclusive NFTs of their films – giving buyers the chance to be part of movie history.
“Paus NFTs provides a new model for distribution and monetization that cinema has never seen before,” said Rishi Kapoor, CEO of Paus. Going forward, following the launch of five initial projects, the platform will be offering filmmakers the chance to sell NFTs of their films, exploring this brand new possibility for independent filmmakers to earn money for their work. Paus’ new filmmaker NFT platform within their website is the very first of its kind, offering independent filmmakers support in monetizing their films, through the sales of NFTs of anything from copies of the film itself to one-off merchandise pieces.
The official BFI network release Salt Water Town is among the selection of films that have partnered with creator economy platform Paus to create purchasable NFTs of their films. The award-winning production company, Jones’ Three Meetings of the Extraordinary Committee will also all be among the films available to purchase as NFTs as well as exclusive extras, unique to each film. Each of these will be available for purchase on digital collectables marketplaces such as Rarible and OpenSea, fully integrated through the Paus streaming service.
How it works
Paus works with third-party NFT marketplaces such as Rarible and OpenSea and integrates with them within the Paus streaming service so that viewers can stream and buy NFTs all in one place.
Magine Pro’s flexible OTT platform allows our partners, like Paus, to do this seamlessly in their Magine Pro-built service using widgets. Magine Pro widgets are a powerful way for partners to enrich their streaming service and engage audiences by rendering their own hosted & developed HTML applications within the Magine Pro web, iOS & Android mobile applications.
The Magine Pro CMS Console also gives Paus the freedom to curate their service and effectively highlight content that offers NFTs as well as communicate what they offer.
What is an NFT?
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. NFTs can be anything digital (movies, music, art etc.) and are essentially digital certificates of authenticity or proof of ownership. They are a non-fungible unit of data stored on a digital ledger (blockchain), making them unique and valuable as each NFT is one of a kind. An owner of an NFT has control over where it is seen, resold, and more.
NFTs available through Paus offer buyers the chance to purchase a “digital certificate” of that film, depending on what part of that film is being ‘tokenised’.
NFTs available through Paus
Paus has partnered with Dan Thorburn, director of Salt Water Town starring Tom Glynn-Carnet and Owen Teale, to create three NFT packages, which will be given to the three highest bidders. The third highest (bronze) will receive an NFT of Salt Water Town and a special edition NFT poster. The second highest (silver) will receive the bronze package, plus a virtual screenwriting masterclass with Dan Thorburn. The highest bidder (gold) will receive the bronze and silver packages, plus a day on set with Thorburn during the making of his next project, giving them valuable access to Dan’s network and insights into his award-winning filmmaking process.
Paus users will also get the opportunity to own the one singular unreleased limited edition copy of the film, Three Meetings of the Extraordinary Committee with an alternative ending, plus additional material including an exclusive NFT poster, behind-the-scenes stills and a copy of the screenplay. Three Meetings of the Extraordinary Committee has won numerous awards worldwide, with its festival run still ongoing, and is currently in consideration for the upcoming BAFTAs.
The third project comes from the prolific Roger Ballen, who was named an Honorary Doctor of Art and Design by Kingston University in 2018. Ballen has always pursued a singular artistic goal: to give expression to the human psyche and visually explore the hidden forces that shape who we are. To celebrate the release of the first-ever film version of his hugely successful creation, Roger the Rat, Ballen and his team have created a series of exclusive NFT collectables. His short film Roger the Rat will be streaming on Paus soon.
Paus have also partnered with Penelope Trappes and Agnes Haus to release their film Mother’s Blood, a surreal, gothic art film created to accompany Penelope Trappes’ reinterpretation of her critically acclaimed 2021 album Penelope Three. Pitchfork noted it as having a “haunting, dreamlike quality” and it was described by The Wire as “full of redemption and hope”. Inspired by past feminist artists, the film is a dark fairy-tale, which follows a mother searching for herself, and her daughter, through different epigenetic landscapes and guises. With the purchase of exclusive NFT clips, buyers will get their very own link which will allow them to download the full one-hour film along with outtakes.
The feature River of Love by Akash Khurana will be the first-ever Bollywood film to be released as an NFT. ‘It tells the story of a man who loses his memory after an attack and the mystical journey he undertakes with a woman who helps him remember his past. Paus is teaming up with the filmmakers to mint a set of limited edition film releases that are incredibly unique in that only the buyers will be able to access the film; the film will never have another digital release or be made available to the public.

How search aggregators benefit streaming services & the consumer
Discoverability is essential for online video streaming services today, where competition is high. And there are many ways to increase awareness and visibility of your content and service, including well-thought-through marketing strategies and campaigns that can build a strong online presence. Partnerships are also a fantastic way to extend marketing efforts and boost discovery.
Streaming services partnering with online search aggregators like JustWatch and PlayPilot is a great example. In our latest white paper, research analyst firm Omdia highlighted how this type of partnership can be particularly advantageous for video services, “With an increasing number of consumers relying on online searches to help decide what to watch, presence on online video comparison guides will be crucial in driving viewership.”
Search aggregation services effectively scan multiple video streaming services to surface movies and TV shows that are available. They don’t host the content themselves but instead provide links to services that do. A user can browse or type in the name of specific content they are looking for. The search aggregation service will then share information on which streaming services are currently hosting the content, whether a transaction is required, and a link to the service itself. They are particularly useful for consumers who subscribe to multiple streaming services as it eliminates having to search through each service individually.

We were also joined by Sophie, alongside Rishi Kapoor, founder and CEO of paus, and Omdia, in our recent webinar, OTT Discovery: Expert insights on how to stand out amongst the crowd, where we discussed how today’s audiences discover new video services and content and what OTT providers can do to stand out amongst the crowd. Magine Pro’s CEO, Matthew Wilkinson, during the discussion, talked about how streaming services can benefit from partnerships with aggregators. Matthew says, “Enabling consumers to search for specific content within the likes of PlayPilot or JustWatch and have your content visible without the consumer being an existing subscriber to your service generates a huge opportunity for operators to increase conversion rates. Search aggregators like JustWatch and PlayPilot are also more open agnostic; they are not platform-specific like some universal search options. Generally speaking, they have much broader coverage in terms of service and discoverability.” Adding, “There’s also a wider benefit and opportunity for operators partnering with search aggregators. Aggregators like these offer a huge data point, as they can monitor what content people search for, where and when it was last available and at what price point, which can help inform a streaming services content strategy. Some also support paid marketing, which is great for services that want to boost their content visibility further as it is instantly discoverable.”
The Magine Pro OTT platform offers flexibility for all our partners. We make it easy for our clients to work together with their partners and integrate efficiently with services like PlayPilot and JustWatch. As Sophie de Mac Mahon from FlixOlé points out, “The integration is already created, and the daily updates are working perfectly. Magine Pro platform has streamlined this process, and it is worth being there and almost effortless.”
For more practical insights on improving discoverability, and to learn more about the benefits of partnering with search aggregators, check out our latest white paper and webinar.

paus partners with Raindance Film Festival & offers access to incredible films
Magine Pro’s partner paus has partnered with the Raindance Film Festival this year to enable award-winning filmmakers the opportunity to premiere their work on the paus service.
The partnership means paus users can now discover over 200 unique films in a series of 24-hour windows during the run-up to the Raindance Film Festival (between 27th October – 6th November 2021). And once the festival ends, the films will be available to stream for the rest of 2021, giving the filmmakers the opportunity to receive tips from fans, friends and family all over the world.
The founder of Raindance, Elliot Grove, said of the exciting collaboration, “Raindance is always on the lookout for innovation and constructive disruption. For Paus, a company that strives to end unfavourable algorithms and intrusive paywalls from independent film, this is a truly remunerative and meaningful partnership”.
paus is an online streaming platform dedicated entirely to independent film and is available via web, iOS, and Android apps. The streaming service is uniquely powered by tips, which means there are no subscriptions, adverts, or set payments for the audience. Instead, viewers can choose to tip filmmakers any amount, at any time.
Rishi Kapoor, founder and CEO of paus said of the exciting opportunity for Raindance filmmakers, “At Paus, we are excited to elevate the nominees to an even wider audience and help facilitate them in monetising their fanbase in the most seamless way possible. Paus’ global reach with our dedicated community of independent film enthusiasts are thrilled to gain exclusive access to the rich selection of work submitted to the Raindance festival.”
To find out more about paus and its partnership with Raindance, head over to paus.tv. In our case study, you can also learn more about how Magine Pro enabled paus to launch their unique streaming service.
We also recently spoke with paus, founder and CEO, Rishi Kapoor, for an insight into the inspiration behind paus and what impact its unique tipping feature has had on subscriber growth. Check out a snippet of the Q&A here, or download our latest white paper, OTT Discovery: How to stand out amongst the crowd to read the full story.
Q&A: Rishi Kapoor, founder of paus, shares an insight into the unique streaming service

Rishi Kapoor is an experienced professional in film distribution both UK and Internationally. A former executive at Sony Pictures, Universal
Studios, Warner Bros. and Disney. After many years working on distribution deals with Netflix, Amazon and Apple, he turned his attention to the independent film space, supporting independent filmmakers at paus.tv.
What’s the origin of paus? And what did you set out to achieve at the beginning?
Having worked in the commercial space for such a long time with big brands, I felt content was becoming increasingly commoditized and manufactured. And as a film enthusiast, I could see the authenticity being lost because the models weren’t there to support content that had smaller audiences. If you’re Netflix, for example, spending billions of dollars on content, you have to make content with mass appeal, which means many fantastic stories that may not attract millions of people just get lost. So I wanted to solve a problem for niche content that wasn’t being solved as the traditional model of one-size-fits-all didn’t fit all.
What was the inspiration behind the paus’ unique tipping feature? And how does revenue share with independent filmmakers work?
In my opinion, no model was fair for creators and audiences. The free ad-based model can require lots of traction for any meaningful revenue to be earned. And at the same time, there was a rise in this creator economy. Creators were moving online to target their audience directly and monetize without involving a distributor or sales agent or getting a deal with a big streaming service. I was particularly inspired by other creative economy platforms such as Patreon and OnlyFans. They were solving this issue but for other industries and creators, such as influencers and musicians. They proved that people want to support the creators they like and inspired the tipping model for paus.
At paus, filmmakers take 80% of the revenue, and we keep 20%. The feature is fully integrated and seamless on the platform. For example, if someone watches a film in London on paus and opts to tip, the filmmaker in New York will receive their share within minutes. Interestingly, Twitter, Snapchat and Clubhouse have also both recently launched their own tipping feature. So I think we may soon see a shift in how the internet is monetized with more direct-to-consumer payment models supporting creators.

For content owners, it’s really easy to get drowned out on a one-size-fits-all platform, like Amazon Prime, where you have independent films sitting alongside blockbusters such as Jurassic World.
The paus model gives more back to the filmmakers. So yes, it’s tipping, but it’s coupled with a platform that’s free to use and is a dedicated space for independent film. I believe the paus model and the exposure from a dedicated platform are two things that drive creators to our platform.
What are paus’ long-term growth plans? And how does a platform provider like Magine Pro enable you to meet those goals?
We want to work with more filmmakers around the world and provide them with more tools to be able to monetize. We’re not just a tipping platform; we want to do other things, integrating merchandise, ticketed events and anything that creates a fair reward for filmmakers to monetize from their fans. Magine Pro lets us focus our money and attention on the filmmakers and our marketing efforts and spend less time worrying about creating a world-class streaming service in-house. They have given us the foundation and infrastructure to focus on serving the creative community much better.
